The Regulations have established procedure for Registration and Record Keeping of Geographic Object Names, Issue of Dictionaries and Reference Books on Geographic Object Names, Creation and Maintenance of State Catalogue of Geographic Names.

The Regulations have established procedure for Registration and Record Keeping of Geographic Object Names, Issue of Dictionaries and Reference Books on Geographic Object Names, Creation and Maintenance of State Catalogue of Geographic Names.
Registration and Record Keeping of Geographic Object Names aims to save the names as a part of historical and cultural legacy of the Russian Federation peoples. According to these Regulations the following names are subject to the registration and record keeping: the names of Russian Federation geographic objects, of the continental shelf and exclusive economic area of Russian Federation, of the geographic objects discovered and separated out by Russian explorers within the open sea and Antarctic, normalized according to Russian law concerning geographic object names.
The Russian Federation Geodetic and Cartographic Service and other Federal Executive Bodies are to register the names and keep the records in Russian.
The Russian Federation Subject Bodies can register geographic object names and keep the records in the languages of other Russian Federation peoples considering concern of the population of the respective territories.
Registration of geographic object names and record keeping are subject to the Russian Federation Standard Legal Acts on assigning names to geographic objects and on renaming geographic objects. Assigning names to geographic objects is subject to the federal Geographic Object Names act.
According to the Regulations, registration of geographic object names and keeping the records are used for creation and maintenance State Catalogue of Geographic Names.
Official information on geographic object names is prepared on the basis of State Catalogue of Geographic Names and other sources, and it is published in geographic object name dictionaries and reference books.
The dictionaries and reference books are prepared and published by Russian Federation Geodetic and Cartographic Service and other federal executive bodies within their competency.
The Russian Federation Subject Bodies can issue the dictionaries and reference books both in Russian and in languages of the other Russian Federation peoples inhabiting the Russian Federation subject territory.
State Catalogue of Geographic Names is to be created and kept in Russian for the purposes of saving these names, ensuring their uniform and settled use in Russian Federation, as well as for providing the Russian Federation State Bodies, Russian Federation Subject Bodies, local autonomous bodies, organizations, mass media and citizens with official information on geographic object names.
The Russian Federation Geodetic and Cartographic Service is responsible for creation and maintenance of the State Catalogue. It is to be based on standard legal acts on assigning names to geographic objects and on renaming them.
An automated information storage and retrieval system to be developed is intended for storage, updating, processing and operational retrieval of the information contained in the State Catalogue by users' queries.
